Reading Ride Out to Sue
Ryder Care, Nettlebed,
15.02.09
Reading's February ride out took place on Sunday 15th.
A fairly short ride had been planed to visit the Sue Ryder Care facility at
Joyce Grove, Nettlebed, Oxfordshire to present a donation raised from proceeds
of our 2008 Christmas raffle. The petrol station at Reading Services, on
the westbound carriageway of the M4 was deemed the meeting point and a
total of eight bikes turned up for the ride with Bob popping along to see us
off. The run was led by Chris (VFR400R) with Tony (CB1300) acting as Tail
End Charlie. Other branch members participating were: Mick (CBF1000),
Allie (CBR600), Roger and Krys (VF750C), Ian and Angie (ST1100), Gaz (CB250K
Special) and Ian (CBF1000).
We left the services and proceeded along the M4 to
junction 12 where we took the A4 Theale By Pass before joining the A340 and
heading for Pangbourne. We then proceeded along the A329 running adjacent
to the River Thames up to the Wallingford By Pass. We then turned onto the
A4130 and headed towards Nettlebed. At Nettlebed we were joined by Marion
who had driven up with the donation.
The Sue Ryder Care facility at Nettlebed is located in
Joyce Grove, a magnificent Edwardian country house set in 28 acres, originally
built in 1904 by Robert Fleming, grandfather of James Bond author, Ian Fleming.
The house features many large rooms, a superb galleried landing and even a
haunted nursery which is now used as an office (during daytime only). The
fully equipped site offers day care as well as being a hospice, although many
patients return home to spend their final time in familiar surroundings. We were greeted by Jo Read, from the fund raising department, who showed us
around the extensive facilities and gave us a very informative insight to it's
running. The Cheque for £100.00 was presented to
Jo by Mick before we left and headed to Henley-on-Thames for a pub lunch of
bangers and mash.
Thanks to Sue Ryder Care and Jo Read for showing us
around.
